Clara Nartey

I had an engaging interview with Dr. Heidi Brooks, The Chair of the Art Committee at The Yale School of Management. I’m happy to share that our chat is now live on her podcast – Learning Through Experience.

The basis for our conversation is that six pieces of my work were acquired by The Yale School of Management and 5 are currently installed in the school.

I’m committed to education as a liberating structure and experience – liberating for our hearts, our minds, our spirits, and our impact.

So l’m delighted to be able to impact Evans Hall, Yale School of Management’s central building, through Clara Nartey’s art.

And since I’ve been learning so much through experiencing Clara’s work, l invited her to be our guest in this second episode of season 2 of Learning Through Experience.

In this conversation, Dr. Brooks and I talked about the power of art to challenge our perspectives and to cultivate joy.

Clara Nartey’s vision of what art can do has challenged my perspective and it’s really mapping onto my own dawning awareness.

I’ve been using arts in the classroom for many years, often poetry and visual arts to begin class and to have people see difficult issues through an easier-on-the-spirit doorway.

Here’s something I said in the interview as I reflected on my Joy of Living Series of works :

“I wanted to show that at the end of our time, what is left is a reflection of who we have been, what we have lived, what we have done. What we have lived and what we have done is not summarized at the end of our lives, but it is every minute of our lives that we live.”

We talked about so much more; including art as a reflective practice. And I walked through each of the six pieces of works the school has acquired, installed, and titled: The Joy of Living Exhibition. You’ll hear the inspiration behind each piece of the works in this interview.

The Joy of Living Exhibit is part of the permanent collection at Yale School of Management. I hope it impacts the way that people experience Evans Hall, perhaps even how they see each other and some of the issues that this vaulted education hopes to help them wrestle with as leaders for business and society.

It was an invigorating chat. The Learning Through Experience podcast even transformed a photo of me into art for the cover, which I thought was really cool. You’ll find our conversation on the Yale Insights website.

Please, take a listen.
